I Want to Do Christmas Differently

December 8, 2009 · 10 comments

Thanks to movements like Advent Conspiracy, people are starting to think about doing Christmas differently. I have a couple of ideas (and do not claim all of these to be original). More importantly, I would love to hear yours.

  • Take time to make a gift. The best gifts I’ve ever received were hand-made by the giver. It can be something simple. It’s the time you take and the creativity that is the big win here. Google is your friend if you are at a loss for ideas.
  • Give stories. If your budget is tight, sit down and write a memorable moment you shared with the friend of family member and give it to them. Or sit around and share stories over Christmas dinner. They will remember this more than a coffee mug or gift card.
  • Adopt a family. You know families who are having a rough go of it this Christmas. Why not adopt them? Invite them to your family Christmas parties, buy them gifts, give them cash. Whatever adopting a family for Christmas looks like to you, go for it. I’m sure any little bit would help hurting families this Christmas.
  • Buy someone’s coffee. I know this sounds weird, but last Christmas, a random man in Starbucks paid for my (and a couple of others in line) coffee and said, “it’s my Christmas gift to you.” It probably cost him $15, but I will remember it for a long time. Not earth-changing, just a really neat way of saying Merry Christmas.
  • Sponsor a child. If you have it in the budget, you can sponsor a child for $38/month through Compassion International. If you don’t have it in the budget, find it. $38 about 9 cups of coffee from Starbucks or 4 meals dining out per month. If you don’t think it makes a difference, watch this video from Catalyst of a sponsored man meeting the man who sponsored him. Or read this blog post of Molly Piper meeting the child her family sponsors.
  • More ideas: You can find fun, easy, cheap ideas in this brochure from Advent Conspiracy or at Rethinking Christmas.

What are some other ways you can do Christmas differently?

So glad you posted this, Jon. I was going to send you the link to the Advent Conspiracy YouTube videos, but of course, you have seen them. We talked about this in Sunday School, and Kyle and I have had some discussions about how we can do this. I am having a hard time coming up with gifts this year… guess I will start with your links!

Love this post. I blogged about this myself last year after watching the Advent Conspiracy video. http://mjbillingtonquebec.blogspot.com/2008/12/ive-been-thinking.html

Maybe there are some useable ideas there.

Your gift ideas are awesome, Jill. The ABC letter and a video are really cool ideas. Thanks for sharing your posts with us.

Jon-this is a great post! I too am trying to do less “gift obsessing” this year, and concentrate more on what this season means to me and those close to me. I’ve made an effort to have groups of friends over for dinner as a Christmas celebration. I’m also baking lots of cookies and breads to give out–it’s so easy every year to get stuck stressing about if you spent enough on so-and-so, did you get an even amount of gifts for each family member, are your gifts thoughtful enough and so on. I’m glad to see so many trying to change the greedy side of Christmas and bring it back to what matters!

I’ll be involved with Help Portrait this year. I will be doing portraits for 13 families this Saturday. I have about 8-10 people helping me out.

You can read more about it here:

Help Portrait is awesome, Jay! That’s great you’re a part of it. What kind of gear do you use? We recently picked up a Nikon D90, but I’m still learning how to use it. :)

I use Nikon equipment as well. I have a D80.Next is the D700. If I sell one of my kids I can afford the D3s.

This sounds silly, but my favorite is the buy someone coffee! How awesome is that. I want to figure out a way to do it so no one notices…maybe in the drive thru…
I hate attention in public. (That’s where your wife gets it)
Love this post~

Hi Jon,

There are many children in foster care this Christmas. It is a horrible thing for these kids to be dealing with the separation from their families any time of year but the holidays make it especially hard. One thing that the community could do is to help sponser a foster child to help out the many foster families in the county. The state is very limited on funds and foster families bear the burden for many expenses for these children. (clothing, birthday, Christmas, diapers etc…. If anyone would like to help this holiday season they can call their local DFCS office in their county – we foster families very much appreciate it!
